Retalhos Cariocas, which translates into "Rio Scraps", was born in the Barreira do Vasco favela slum of Rio de Janeiro, where having a job is difficult, owning a business is unheard of, and working for violent drug trafficking gangs is often the only avenue for a young entrepreneur.

Growing demand for Retalhos Cariocas unique hand-made products allows employment of more and more women out of the favela slums. "I started the courses because I wanted to share my knowledge and put in people's minds that even though they live in a favela and are poor, they can go to college and succeed. I think this is our real spirit."
